One-year from today, July 22, 2019, the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti, will be effective. Many TPS recipients have not received their work authorizations putting them in great danger of losing their jobs.
FANM condemns the cruel decision by the Trump administration that will leave over 58,000 Haitian nationals and their 27,000 U.S. born children living in fear of an uncertain future.
TPS status gives Haitian nationals a safe haven in the U.S. where they have established their lives by contributing to our economy and our communities. TPS recipients will now be faced with having to make difficult decisions that will break families, harm our economy and destabilize Haiti.
The Department of Homeland Security’s decision has left families devastated. This administration’s lack of consideration for Haitian immigrants who contribute so much to our nation is reprehensible. Ignoring the destruction caused by the 2010 earthquake, Hurricane Matthew, the imported cholera outbreak, hurricane Irma and Maria is unconscionable. Mostly, Haiti’s current political instability due to civil unrest and grave human rights’ abuses is not a safe place for TPS families and the U.S. born children. The Haitian Government does not have the will nor the capacity to protect these families’ lives from harm. Protests, tire burning, and road blockages are frequent and often spontaneous.
Marleine Bastien, Executive Director of Family Action Network Movement (FANM), stated, “We must act promptly find a permanent solution of all TPS Recipients and their families. Deporting them to nations that are dangerous and unsafe is inhumane and cruel. We must act now.”
