FANM’s Statement on DED Extension
The Trump administration announced Wednesday that it will extend temporary legal protections for Liberian immigrants for another calendar year. Liberian immigrants on the Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) program have lived and worked legally in the United States for decades and they were just three days away from becoming eligible for deportation. They now have a new deadline of March 30, 2020, when they will either have to live as undocumented immigrants or return to Liberia. Marleine Bastien, Executive Director of Family Action Network (FANM), said “This is tremendous news. It shows that hard work pay off. FANM and other organizations have been organized nationwide for DED protection. However, these DED recipients need a permanent solution. We encourage for congress to pass the Dream and Promise Act that will trailblaze a path to permanent residency for thousands of TPS, DACA and DED recipients. FANM is committed to the passage of these bills into law. The Dream and Promise Act will give TPS, DACA and DED recipients a safe haven in the U.S. where they have established their lives by contributing to our economy and our communities.”
